Kitch'

Last week I shared how I transformed yard sale rejects into cute kitchen decor here.  I left you with a to be continued as to what their purpose was, and I'm sure you were on the edge of your seat ;o)  Before we moved into our new house eight months ago I went on a painting rampage.  As my husband works off shore, I painted all 1250 square ft of our home myself with some help from my father in law.  I choose yellow for the open living room/kitchen/dining area.  Yes yellow is notorious for being a difficult wall color to pull off, but we have tons of windows and it really makes our space bright and cheery.

A few months later I was still loving it but realized I wasn't always feeling bright and cheery.  I wanted to bring in some dark elements for contrast.  I choose navy and grey accents for the living room.  In the kitchen I debated trying my hand at tiling a back splash to break up all the yellow.  But my hubs was at work and my two year old was running amok so I nixed that idea.  I settled on painting the back splash with chalkboard paint.  It brought in the dark contrast that I was looking for and was only $10 for the can of paint at home depot (which I barely made a dent in it with this project).   It helped achieve the modern and casual style that we love.  Plus I heart functional design, big time.

I love that I can jot down grocery lists and notes on the fly, as well as whatever is inspiring me at the time.  I am going away for a couple days, so Je t'aime is for my boys.  I'll probably leave it up through Valentine's Day, but who really knows!  It's great to be able to switch it up so easily.

I use the canisters I made to hold the chalk and eraser.  Since I spray painted them (which is not exactly food safe), I was happy to have them to keep the chalk accessable yet disguised.  The door to our back yard is on the other side of this room, so I also have all of little man's sidewalk chalk stored in there.

If you don't agree with Robert Louis Stevenson and I that "wine is bottled poetry", I'm not sure that we can still be friends ;o)  All those photos are held up with magnets on the side of our wine cooler (the red to the right is the door), since our fridge is stainless and magnets don't stick to it.

Now to muster up the gumption to update the cabinets with a fresh coat of paint and new hardware...

Fall Together

"I believe everything happens for a reason.  People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you can appreciate them when they go right, you believe less so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

hibernate

My little dude has called me mama bear for awhile now, and it melts my heart every stinkin' time.  The surname has stuck and now we are a family of bears... daddy bear, mama bear, Triston bear, and Smalls bear.  On this chilly Friday afternoon we decided to build a cave and hibernate in true bear fashion.

We draped heavy blankets over our dinning table, then piled in soft blankets and pillows for coziness and warmth.  A stack of books, a pair of flashlights and we were set.

Ready for me to come play.

Seriously mom those books aren't going to read themselves.

 Smalls bear, official cave mascot.

 Currently infatuated with flashlights.

 My current infatuation.

If it weren't for the fact that the food in our kitchen is wooden, we might never leave.

Scavenge

On random Saturday afternoons I like to scavenge yard sales.  Instead of being one of the early birds trying to secure the best items, I like to be last.  I show up within the last hour of the sale when not much is left.  It's often quirky random stuff that has been discounted in the hopes that someone will take it away and save the seller a trip to Goodwill.  I happen to adore quirky and random, and a good deal never hurt either.  I found two ceramic kitchen canisters while scavenging and snagged both for a mere 75¢.  They were definitely too country looking but I had big plans for them.

sorry for the iPhone pics, will remember to take real ones next time!

All I needed was a can of white high gloss spray paint.  After 3 to 4 thin and even coats I ended up with this:

The power of spray paint!  They were transformed into something sleek, modern and kitchen appropriate.  White ceramic objects can be found everywhere from this banana bud vase from Jonathan Adler to this pear canister from Z Gallerie.  In the next create post I'll show what I'm using them for... and it's not to hold sugar and flour.

My kinda girl

girlfriends patterson maker
I was blessed to spend a wonderful weekend with some of my favorite girls.  On Thursday night I got to escape for a night out of cocktails and Country Strong with the fabulous Mrs. J.  Now before all my old friends worry that I've gone too country down here in La, let me tell you the movie is fabulous.  I am not a fan of country music, but for the length of the show I was captivated and transported to a different world.  Mrs. Paltrow was superb.

The next day one of my lovely girls came to stay at our haven for the weekend.  We met freshman year at Trinity College in Hartford, Ct.  Now what on earth was an island girl doing in Hartford you might ask?  Well hear me out.  Growing up on a tropical island all my life, I had gotten it into my head that I wanted a true collegiate experience.  Born in Manhattan, I thought a small New England liberal arts college was the proper way to go about it.  Though my freshman year was amazing and I learned a ton about myself, Connecticut was not for me.  My girl M, the only person I am still in real contact with from that "ideal" college year, is undoubtedly the reason I was there.  Despite only seeing each other once a year we are inexplicably linked and will be friends for life.

My kinda girl is strong and unabashedly herself.  She is my heart and my inspiration.  Each one of my girls is unique and was destined to be in my life.  My girls are scattered all over the place but we work hard to stay connected.  While one can be with the most amazing man in the world, as I am lucky to be, it is our girls that truly understand us.  They have a different level of compassion and empathy.  We lift each other up and share our secrets to making life better.  It is always an incredible boost.  And when one of my girls is hurting, look out!  I am fierce to protect and defend her.  It pains me to no end to see her this way.  For as one of my girls put so eloquently, "friends are the family you choose."  I am grateful for my "family" and the richness they bring to my life.  Hold tight to your girls and remember to nurture your bond, just as you work on nurturing the other relationships in your life.

The L Family

There are times when I can't possibly envision our tight little family trio expanding beyond just us three.  Ok four if you count Smalls but I'm not referring to four legged and furry children right now, he will get his own post at some point.  Then I visit the L family.  And I love every minute of the joyful chaos.  Three kids (and two fur babies) is definitely more than I'm used to.  But every time I'm around them I love the energy.  It's never lonely.  There's always something happening.  And as full as their plate is, they are so full of life.  I had the honor of taking their portraits at the end of last year, with the intention of yielding something holiday card worthy.  Since they are so busy and it was fah-reezing out we were short on time, but the kids were amazing and the light was simply gorgeous.

The two that made the card.

Love the light and the kid's candid faces.

So awesome the way G was able to sneak holding her older bro's finger.  Not an easy feat to get a young teenage boy to agree to.

This is by far my favorite shot of the day.  These lovely people are amazing friends and phenomenal parents.  Their marriage is inspiring.  They are the kind of people you feel blessed to have in your circle.

Thanks L family, I always love documenting you!

It's a beautiful day to escape

Gorgeous morning light streamed in through the room's massive windows on a lovely Saturday morning in December.  My camera melded into my arm and we became one.  What followed was one of the most exhilarating experiences I have ever had as a photographer.

I had learned about Help-Portrait through creativeLIVE.  The premise was simple, on the first Saturday in December photographers around the world would take portraits of people in need.  The photographers would then print the images when ready and present them to their subjects.  Portraiture,  the kind in which a piece of a person's soul is revealed and not the "cheese" kind, is what first got me hooked on photography in high school.  Trying to capture something about a person that can later be conveyed to the viewer is bliss to me.

I joined the Help-Portrait website and prayed that there were photographers in my area planning to participate.  Sure enough I connected with a photographer and a makeup artist that were planning an event at a local nursing home.  When I arrived the morning of the shoot I was given a less than appealing wall to shoot against, but not to worry the other photographer had an extra table cloth.  So we secured it with gaffers tape and set up a reflector and stand.  That coupled with the awesome morning light coming through the window, and my natural light studio was in business.  While the other photographer had fantastic studio lights set up, I couldn't have been happier with my ghetto fab studio.  I absolutely adore natural light.  I shot 28 portraits and in roughly two hours, I was changed.

This is my friend Pearl.  I instantly fell in love with her and wanted to put her in my pocket and call her mine.  I carefully wheeled her into her position (well as carefully as I could, wheel chairs don't have the greatest turning radius so I began each maneuver with "careful I'm a crazy driver" which luckily garnered more chuckles than cries for help).  She turned, gazed out the window and sighed, "It's a beautiful day to escape."  It really was too pretty out to be inside stuck in a chair.  Yet Pearl handled her situation with poise and charm.  She began to chat with me and I tried to remember to check my camera settings as I hung on her every word.  I felt so lucky to be in her presence.

"I'm 97 years old."

"Wow that's quite a long time, you have seen and been through a lot."  Damn I thought, what wisdom in all those years.

"That's right like the Great Depression, some things I don't really think I needed to go through... hope to never see again."

"I totally hear you!  Like, 'that was supposed to make me stronger but did I really need to be any stronger than I already was?!'  What was the single most important experience that you have been through?"

"My Children."

I was thinking about hardships that were good lessons, and there she lays on me the single most important thing in life!  I have felt this since my son was born, but to hear this from a near centenarian rattled me.  Ok universe I get it.  This ex-cynical girl is now fully converted to the romantic side of life.

This firecracker was the first to use the sweet blue wing back chair I had if anyone was able to sit in it.  I would have shown the awesomeness of the whole chair in one shot, but that ghetto fab backdrop of mine  was about four feet wide so close ups were a must.

"How are you?"

"A little too sober but that's the way it is these days!"

"Oh honey if I could help you with that I sure would.  I'm your girl, next time I know!"  Damn no booze in nursing homes?  I would not do well there.  Note to self: always pack a flask in my camera bag for adult photo shoots, just in case.

In truth I am not the funniest girl, but something came over me when faced with the gloominess of the place.  Since I couldn't use my old bartending skills to pass out shots, I tried to make people laugh.  I wanted them to relax for at least a minute and trust me for half a second.

How cute is she?

Well and him too!  I wanted him to take me for a trail ride and show me how to roll my own cigarettes (and no I don't smoke cigs but those are the cute things old cowboys like my grandfather did).

This is Janet on the left.  She was found after Katrina in her house with flood water all the way up to her neck. She has no family, but Sally met her when she was visiting her own mother at the home.  Sally's mother passed away and yet Sally still comes to visit Janet regularly.  This is love people.

I was humbled by the dignity, grace, and humor that many of my subjects displayed in the face of their circumstances.  I ran home from the shoot and held my boys tighter than I ever have.  I was thankful for their love, for our health, and for my youth.

Post Holiday Helper

Feeling a bit of a hangover from all the gooey sugary treats of the past few months?  I know I am.  I consume more sugar between Halloween and New Years Day than I do the rest of the year.  So what to do when your body is hooked on sweets but your skinny jeans common sense tells you otherwise?  Add naturally sweet winter roots and squash into your diet!  They will help satiate your sweet cravings in a balanced way.  Try this easy peasy seasonal concoction:

Maple-Dijon Fries

ingredients:
a few root veggies such as sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips and rutabaga
2 TBS olive oil
2 TBS pure maple syrup
2 TBS dijon mustard
dash chili powder
salt n' peppa

Preheat oven to 400°.  Wash, peel, and chop veg into fries.  The easiest way seems to be to cut them into fourths and then into fries from there.  It takes no time once you get into a rhythm!  I chopped up two medium sweet potatoes as I was lazy and used what was in my pantry.  Usually I will vary up the root veg.

In a large mixing bowl whisk together the dijon mustard and maple syrup.   Be sure to use 100% pure maple syrup, which is naturally processed and less destructive on your body than sugar.  Drizzle in olive oil while whisking.  Add a small dash of chili powder and s&p to taste.   This sauce is also bangin' on pan-seared salmon; add 2 tbs of soy sauce or tamari to really make it rock.

Add veg to bowl and toss to coat.

A little olive oil spray on your cookie sheet is always a good idea.  Spread veg on the cookie sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or a bit longer depending on your oven.  Flip 'n shake the fries once or twice during cooking to prevent sticking and cook evenly.  What you end up with is a yummy snack or side worthy of toddlers and nice dinners alike.

Bon Anno

Dear friends,
It is with a new year that I start this fresh journey of my life.  It already feels like home here and I look forward to visiting often.
I absolutely adore New Years Eve and always have.  Now I am not a sequins and feathers kinda gal, but at the end of the old year anything goes!  I instantly crave shimmer and bubbly, which leads me to the first goodie I will share: Cristalino Brut Rose Cava.  If you haven't already indulged you simply must.  It was ranked as one of Wine Spectator's best values and it truly doesn't disappoint.  Their brut isn't too shabby either; we floated pomegranate seeds in it for thanksgiving and it was delish.  At under $10 a bottle (6.99 in my neck 'o the woods) it is do-able anytime.  Champagne Wednesday anyone?
